Official review to come, but i LOVED this ARC provided by the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review Thank you My reactions 1 Woo the Shadow King. 5 16 19OMG THE COVER IS SO PRETTY Love it Step 1 Woo the king.Step 2 Marry the king.Step 3 Kill the king and take his kingdom for herself.Well, who can argue with such a perfect plan Lmao I ve read this book extremely fast I pick it up so I could read the first chapter and when I realized I was already halfway through I have read every book by this author and she s yet to disappoint me.This book was addictive There is no other word to describe it The story was quite original The concept that the main character wants to kill the Shadow King after she marries him so she can have the crown and power was brilliant. And the execution was done perfectly. The story was well constructed, the characters were well developed, the writing was good, the friendships were great and the plot was awesome.I loved the main character and how ruthless and smart she is The development she had was great I love me some good female character And the romance may not have been my favorite part, but it was still good Definitely recommend if you like a dark, unique, addictive standalone YA fantasy ARC received from publishers via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.Official release date 25th February 2020. Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power 1 Woo the Shadow King.2 Marry him.3 Kill him and take his kingdom for herself. No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King s power Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she s going to do everything within her power to get it.But Alessandra s not the only one trying to kill the king As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen all while struggling not to lose her heart After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen This book had one of my favorite summaries I ve seen so far this year, and that cover Plus, I mean, shadows, right Shadowsssssssssss I ll first say that I absolutely loved the story line I always enjoy books with the goal to murder but then feelings change along the way Plus, the Shadow King was just so freaking sweet I wanted to hug him Now, my problem was Alessandra I adored that she did however she chose, be it with her sexual desires, murder, or whatever I even love villains And she was very much a villain But dang, I just could not connect with this lady Then we have to toss in some other guy, but we know she has to be with the Shadow King, right Right She was just so hot headed and made poor choices at times However, her character did grow, but even toward the end I was annoyed with this woman still making lame decisions Now, besides my frustrations with the MC, I very much loved the writing, the world building, the originality, and the swoon Now, I just want to be enveloped in a ton of shadows I m upset this is over I m upset I read it in two days I m even upset that it doesn t come out for several months I need the hardcover now But in all seriousness, this is the type of story I shouldn t love I m not a fan of hate to love main characters, but I gotta give props to Alessandra She s cunning and smart, and I appreciated her ambition and ability to take her own fate in her hands. To say I am OBSESSED with the romance in this book is an understatement I needed this story in my life, and I m so glad I read it So far, Tricia Levenseller has only written books I absolutely couldn t put down, and each title gets and intoxicating. An absolute must read of 202o. They ve never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart. And they never will ARC received in exchange for an honest review thank you This book was SO MUCH FUN I knew it was going to be a good read when a the author described it as a Slytherin romance , and b the epigraph was a quotation from Damon in The Vampire Diaries.I did have a great time tearing through this book yesterday afternoon, and this rating is really 3.5 stars However, some plot holes and poor worldbuilding have combined to make me round down instead of up.Eighteen year old Lady Alessandra Stathos is the beautiful, ambition second daughter of the Earl of Masis She s no stranger to murder as we learn on the very first page, she did away with the boy who was responsible for breaking her heart She no longer has one, which gives rise to her new plan marry the Shadow King, ruler of Naxos, then murder him and set herself up as queen.Only it isn t that easy Nineteen year old Kallias Maheras, the Shadow King, is protected by the shadows themselves An ancient gift allows his bloodline to turn incorporeal, making them invulnerable to threats Alessandra is going to have work hard if she wants to make him fall in love with her To complicate matters, she isn t the only one with an eye on killing the king there are assassins after Kallias As she gets closer to him, she starts to wonder if murdering Kallias really is the way to get everything she wants. This was a really short book like I said, I read it in an afternoon so I can t give away any of the plotline The Good I LOVED the Slytherin aspect of this Slytherin romance Both Alessandra and Kallias are ruthless and ambitious totally a match made in hell To keep up with the Harry Potter analogy, think of this as a relationship between, say, Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy I love a good antihero heroine, and this book delivered that in spades While the relationship started out as very insta lust, the banter between Alessandra and Kallias made me smile a lot and helped me forget the fact that they were falling in love far too quickly for my liking In fact, lots of the book was surprisingly funny Alessandra is a heroine with ACTUAL HOBBIES I recently read a book where the heroine s hobby was reading books written by the real life author yes, I m serious, and it is as cringy as it sounds So it was awesome to get treated to a girl who has a real passion for sewing, and it s not treated as a plot device it really is part of her character The Bad Really, really, really poor worldbuilding Naxos seems to be a cross between Ancient Greece and Regency England plus semi automatic weapons , without actually being either It was extremely difficult to visualise, and it didn t help that a lot of things weren t described very well Some things were, like dresses, but not actual scenery or actions Some inconsistencies in Alessandra s behaviour To be perfectly honest, as soon as she met Kallias I knew she wouldn t end up killing him, and the book s attempts to make me feel like that was still an option came off as fairly contrived As an extension of this, I felt like they fell for each other surprisingly quickly, although it s true they re perfect for each other The beginning and end of the book were way too fast paced, requiring tons of suspension of disbelief The middle was the best part I could tell the villain FROM MILES AWAY In fact, the villain was so obvious they re probably visible FROM SPACE I couldn t believe it when the villain turned out to be the person I d suspected all along I thought for sure they must have been a red herring But no Overall I do recommend this book to you all it was really fun to read, and doesn t take long It isn t as good as I was hoping it would be when I read that excellent blurb basically, it s no The Wicked King but I certainly enjoyed it Blog Bookstagram
